Mentoring programs involve matching talented, experienced employees (mentors) with promising, less experienced employees (mentorees). Over time, working one-on-one, the mentor and mentoree—and the organization—reap real rewards, including the following:

  • Enhancing strategic business initiatives
  • Encouraging retention
  • Reducing turnover costs
  • Improving productivity
  • Breaking down the "silo" mentality that hinders cooperation among company departments or divisions
  • Elevating knowledge transfer from just getting information to retaining the practical experience and wisdom gained from long-term employees
  • Enhancing professional development
  • Linking employees with valuable knowledge and information to other employees in need of such information
  • Using your own employees, instead of outside consultants, as internal experts for professional development

While explaining the mentoring process to an individual dong research on implementing a mentoring program at their facility, I was asked "Why are profile forms an essential part of a mentoring program?"  I explained that it is important to have profile forms because the form serves as an important matching criterion for mentors and mentorees.  The profile form allows each participant to express their personal views, beliefs and expectations prior to starting a mentoring program.  Once the form is completed, it will help facilitate the matching process for the program manager, or the software, if one is being utilized.  In any type of mentoring program, the goal is to have two individuals with similar viewpoints matched together so that the relationship has a rewarding experience and a positive outcome at the end of the mentoring relationship.
