Matching by the Numbers

I often get asked by Mentoring Program Managers that use my online system (MentoringComplete.com) at what percentage level should one disqualify a potential match, 75%? 55%?, etc.  The answer is, "it depends".  Though our matching algorithm does provide, on average, a 90% success rate in matches, the system is designed to provide the Program Manager with a starting point for considering a potential match.  The percentage of matching is really a starting point.  Just because someone matches another at a 80 or 90% rate, doesn't necessarily mean it's a good match.  Matching involves reviewing all the data in the profile form and gaining an impression of what would make a good match and comparing that info with a potential mentor.  Although the numbers do matter, on some level, they should be considered within the context of the answers provided in the form.  This does take time but the payoff is having successful mentoring relationships.
