corporate mentoringI am frequently asked this question...

“How do you know if you have a successful mentoring program?”

There are 4 specific characteristics that every mentoring program should have:

  1. A well-defined purpose tied to a company’s specific objective such as:
    • high potentials
    • diversity
    • retention
  • A matching process that takes into consideration competency areas as well as personal characteristics needed in a mentoring relationship.
  • Training of three specific groups: mentors, mentorees, and the mentoree’s immediate manager. It is important for all three parties can understand the dynamics involved of a mentoring reatkionship and how they differ from a management relationship.
  • Ongoing follow up from a Mentoring Program Manager (MPM). The MPM serves several key purposes:
        • MPM’s hold mentoring pairs accountable.
        • MPM’s serve as a resource both in assisting the pairs and the work they are doing together and they resolve any issues that arise with any given pair.
        • MPM’s evaluate and attest to the company’s Return On Investment as it pertains to the mentoring program.
